The purpose of establishing Polské uhlí, a.s., which began operations its operation in 2003, was to ensure the supply of the missing quantity and assortment of black coal for the needs of the Czech and Slovak markets from the Polish mine production. The reserves of hard coal mines in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin on the territory of the Czech Republic were significantly lower than the resources located in Poland. Coal from both sources shared a similarly high quality, both for coking and energy production steam coal.

Although coal production is affected by the European trend of decarbonization and declining reserves, coal still has not been fully replaced by alternative raw materials—especially for the production of pig iron, cement, energy, or heat. The company continues to maintain its position in the market in the field of black coal purchasing and sales, which remains its core business activity, alongside mediating sales of metallurgical materials—an area that is the main focus of the WĘGLOKOKS Group, of which the company is a part.
