Despite declining coal consumption in Europe and the United States, global demand continues to rise — especially in Asia. According to CNBC, the total installed capacity of coal-fired power plants reached a record 2,175 GW last year.Consumption is growing in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, driven by high gas prices and rising energy needs related to AI development and data centers.
Nations like China and India are also stockpiling coal due to potential blackouts caused by extreme weather. For example, China imported a record 543 million tonnes of coal last year and accounted for 56% of global demand. The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects coal demand to remain at high levels at least until 2027.
