Due to soaring natural gas prices, European power companies are being forced to return to using coal. According to analyst estimates, electricity production from this fossil fuel could increase by up to a quarter in Europe over the next six months. The current price shock in the gas market is temporarily altering the economic viability of operations, bringing previously receding coal sources back to the forefront. This unexpected turnaround thus presents a serious complication for long-term plans aimed at reducing emissions and decarbonizing the region's energy sector.
