Giant Power Plant Switched from Coal to Wood Burning. The Result is Shameful, Experts Warn

An analysis by the Ember team highlights that the conversion of Britain's formerly largest coal-fired power station, Drax, to biomass burning is failing to deliver the promised environmental benefits. Although this method of energy generation is formally considered renewable, the power plant consumed millions of times of imported wood last year and, with high carbon dioxide emissions, became Britain's largest polluter. Furthermore, this operation has long survived thanks to massive state subsidies amounting to billions of pounds, which burden taxpayers. Due to these negative impacts on both the environment and the economy, restrictions on subsidy support for the energetic use of biomass will come into force in Britain starting next year.
